License model

Choose the license model for the license pool. Available values:

  • Rental: Rental contracts have an expiration date after which the right to use the software is revoked.

  • Perpetual: Perpetual contracts don’t expire. Once such license is purchased, it can be used indefinitely, given that the terms of the license agreement are not violated.

Supply contract

Select the contract that this license pool is a part of. This field is optional and is shown only if contracts management is enabled at the system settings.

License agreement

Choose contract.

Licensed by

Licensed by attribute describes the licensing model of license pool.

  • Named users: The software can be installed into multiple assets by the same user using just one license. Automatic allocation of licenses is supported when this attribute is selected.

  • Installed instance: Each instance of software installation consumes one license. Automatic allocation of licenses is supported when this attribute is selected.

  • Concurrent users: Dictates the maximum number of users that there can be using the software at the same time.

  • Physical server: A license is required for each server that runs the software.

  • Physical CPU: dictate that the software requires a license for each CPU where it is run, respectively.

If you, for some reason, want to change the field value after saving the form for the first time (e.g. installed instance > named users), you first have to remove the license pool bindings. To do that, go to the analyze tab of the license pool item and unallocate all allocated licenses. After that, you are able to change the value of the licensed by field.

Attribute name

Description

Restricted to

Restrictions are used to set constraints for the allowed use of the license pool. The use of license pool may be restricted to certain asset group, location, organisation, user, contract, or cost center. By default, no restrictions are set.

Asset-based licenses can also be restricted to a named company. Asset-based licenses are licensed by the installed instance, physical server or physical CPU.

Automatic allocation

Determines whether or not the automatic allocation of licenses is used or not (Yes/No). If automatic allocation is enabled, licenses from this pool can be automatically allocated to assets/users that meet the rules and restrictions defined.

Rule

Automatic allocation of licenses is performed by the defined rules and restrictions. Only one rule can be defined for each license pool. Basically, the rule defines the target assets/users to which the licenses should be allocated to. See the following table for detailed descriptions of the rules.

Rule

Description

Asset configuration > Software inventory

Licensed by Installed instance: A license from this license pool is automatically allocated for those assets, which have an instance of licensed software installed and meet the restrictions defined.

Licensed by Named users: If the licensed software is found from an asset during the software inventory, a license from this pool is allocated to the asset. In addition to that, the same license is also allocated to all assets, who has the same person as responsible person.

The license is also automatically removed from the asset/user when the software is uninstalled or if the responsible person of the asset is changed.

Asset configuration > Service contract

Licensed by Installed instance: A license from this license pool is automatically allocated to those assets, which have the licensed software installed and which are assigned to defined Service contract.

Licensed by Named users: A license from this license pool is automatically allocated to those assets, which have the licensed software installed and whose responsible person is assigned to defined Service contract.

Notice that the license will not be removed automatically if the binding between asset/user and contract is removed.

Asset configuration > Package distribution

Licensed by Installed instance: A license from this license pool is automatically allocated to those assets to which the package is distributed. If no licenses are available, user may be prompted with a warning message and option to deny the installation.

Pool priority

The pool priority is examined when multiple license pools contain licenses that grants to use the same software. Then the selection of license pool is based on the pool priority.

Manual allocations

Use this field to allocate licenses manually to users or assets that require a license from the license pool.

Allocation can be done according to the scope defined in the Restrictions field.

In the "Allocate licenses manually" popup, you can choose the users or assets to whom you are allocating the licenses from the license pool. If you want to allocate licenses to assets or users that are not managed with Miradore, leave Related CI(s) in Miradore field empty, and define the number of allocated licenses to the Allocated amount field.

Tip:

You can also create a service contract in Operations > Contracts view, assign desired users to the contract in the Operations > Users view, and then set the license pool to allocate licenses automatically using the service contract as the allocation rule.

Allocations from asset/user form enabled

Determines if assets/users can be assigned to this license pool from the asset/user form. (Yes/No)

Minimum allocation time (days)

The minimum allocation time determines the period between two allocations of the same license. The allocation time starts running on the moment when the license is allocated, and once the time is up, the license can be reallocated without quarantine time. If an attempt is made to reallocate the license before the minimum allocation time is up, the license is put in quarantine for the rest of the time to wait for the allocation.
