Endpoint backup can be used to backup files from devices that meet the Endpoint backup requirements and where Endpoint backup client is installed. Once the Endpoint backup has been installed and is ready for use, Miradore admininistrators and users of Miradore managed devices can configure backup jobs for the Endpoint backup enabled devices. The administrators can configure the backup jobs on the Endpoint backup jobs view in the management console of Miradore, and the device users can configure the backup jobs via Endpoint backup client, which is accessible on their computer. The administrators can also deny end-users from creating their own backup jobs.
In Miradore and Endpoint backup client, the backup tasks are managed with Endpoint backup jobs. A single backup job item defines settings for one backup task and also the devices where the backup task will be run.
Backup job configurations are explained in more detail on Endpoint backup job item attributes page, but in short, the settings define the files what to backup, how often the backup is run, and where the backup files are stored.
At Endpoint backup tab in Miradore System settings, it is possible to define default settings for new backup jobs. The default settings are automatically filled to item pages when new backup job items are being created. However, if necessary, the default settings can be overwritten and customized for each backup job separately.
If a backup job is configured to store the backup files to a local or network drive, user authentication is not required. In that case, it is enough that the user has read and write permissions to the backup location. However, if the backup files are desired to be stored to Endpoint backup servers over HTTP(S), then the device user is required to authenticate himself or herself. Otherwise, the backup job cannot be run. The used authentication method can be selected in "Administration > System settings > Endpoint backup" in the management console of Miradore.
When Endpoint backup is selected to use the Microsoft Active Directory-based authentication, then it is possible to define the allowed Active Directory user groups for each backup server separately on the Endpoint backup server form. If the device's user belongs to some of the allowed user groups, then a backup job is authorized to run and the files can be backed up to the Endpoint backup server. However, if the user doesn't belong to some of the allowed Active Directory user groups, then backup jobs are not authorized to run.
Another authentication method is Miradore authentication which allows the device users to authenticate using Endpoint backup user accounts. A backup user account can be created for a user from User form in the management console of Miradore by administrator, or as a self service from the Endpoint backup client by device users. However, this requires that self-registration is allowed from the system settings of Miradore.
Bandwidth management is used to define rules for taking available network bandwidth into account during backup. It allows to define minimum network file transfer speed which is required in order to run backup actions. It is also possible to define maximum bandwidth consumption of backup actions either by a static or dynamic limit. When device users run backup jobs manually, the network bandwidth rules are disregarded. Bandwidth rules can be defined on the default settings for new backup jobs page at Endpoint backup tab in Miradore system settings and also on the Endpoint backup job item. End-users can define bandwidth rules at Endpoint backup client.
