Asset group is a collection of asset configuration items. The management of asset groups is done mainly in the Assets groups view.
There is two types of asset groups: static and dynamic. The asset group type can be selected at the Asset group item page.
Dynamic asset groups are populated automatically with asset configuration items based on the asset filters defined within the asset group settings. The group members are automatically updated every 24 hours by the system task "Update dynamic asset groups".
Static asset groups are not affected by the system task. Instead, administrators and editors can modify the members of static asset groups by manually assigning and removing asset configuration items to/from the groups.
There are many places in Miradore, where you can use restrictions to set a scope for something. The scope defines the target assets where the use of some feature is allowed, or the target assets for some action. When defining the scope, it is possible to use asset attributes, such as device role, operating system category and location to define the target assets, for example. However, if you have a lot of devices which are very heterogeneous, then it could be rather difficult to define a scope which matches to some certain asset configuration items only. But with the help of asset groups, you can easily create groups of whatever assets, and then use the asset group in the scope controls to apply the restriction or action to the devices which are members of the asset group.
Asset groups can be used to assign target assets (i.e. set a scope) for these purposes:
Asset confirmation requests: Defines the devices where asset confirmation requests will be sent to.
Endpoint backup job: Defines the devices where an endpoint backup job should be distributed to.
Endpoint backup jobs allowed to run: Defines the devices where endpoint backup job is allowed to run under end-user account or under local system account.
Item permissions: Defines the devices to which the selected permission holders have a read or write permission in Miradore.
License pool: Defines the devices for which Miradore's automatic license allocation feature is allowed to assign software licenses from a license pool.
Package: Defines the devices for which it is allowed or forbidden to distribute an installation package, also known as installation scope.
Patch: Defines the devices to which security patches are applied to.
Scheduled task profile: Defines the devices where a custom scheduled task should be distributed to.
Self service portal: Defines the devices where Self service portal is available for use.
By default, there are two asset groups in Miradore: "All computers" and "Ungrouped computers", but you can create more asset groups in "Administration > Basic Settings > Asset groups view".
All computers group consists of Asset configuration items whose hardware category's type is "Computer".
Ungrouped computes group, on the other hand, consist of Asset configuration items whose hardware category's type is "Computer" AND which doesn't belong to any other groups than "All computers" group. This means that all Asset configuration items, which belong to any custom asset group, are excluded from this group.
If you want, you can navigate to Asset groups view and use the "Assets in group" column to check how many assets have been added to Asset groups. For a closer analysis, you can open the Asset group items from the view and navigate to the item's Analyze tab, where you see a listing of the assets that belong to the group.
You can use the "Update dynamic group members" task at the Asset group item page to update the members of the particular asset group whenever needed.
Only users who belong to Administrators or Editors user groups have permissions to create, activate, and modify asset groups.
