About event monitoring

Miradore event monitoring is about observing the IT environment, analyzing the collected data and informing the subscriber(s) about the state of the environment. Event monitoring can be compared to an proactive alarm system that watches the health of the environment from multiple point of views. If the system detects a possible threat, a new event is generated. Typical threats for the IT environment are for example expiring asset warranties, license pool low or low asset disk space.

In addition to monitoring of the environment, the event monitoring feature can also be configured to  react certain events automatically by defining automated actions for events. For example, the system can send an email alert or SMS notification about new 'license pool low' events straight to the person, who is responsible for purchasing licenses. Naturally, all thresholds that are used to identify the threatening situations, can be configured to meet the needs of an organization.

About terminology

The key terms and workflow of event monitoring are illustrated in the following picture.

Event monitoring workflow

Picture: Events are created by Monitors when a threatening situation is identified in the IT environment. All open events are listed in the Event queue where users can view and close them manually. In addition, the processing of events can be automated by utilizing the Automated actions. When automated actions have been defined, Miradore can react to new events instantly and automatically when they occur.

Event

An event is a unit of information that is created when a predefined change or anomaly in the state of configuration item occurs within the managed IT environment. An event is created by a monitor, when a threshold value specified in the monitor is achieved or when a defined event occurs. An event can originate from any internal or external business process. A good example of a situation when an event is created is a situation when there is less than defined amount of days remaining of an agreement (i.e. warranty or leasing contract). All events are listed in the Events queue view of Miradore.

Monitor

Monitors are used for monitoring the state of configuration items that have been created into Miradore. The monitors can be configured to tract the state of configuration item attributes and create an event if threshold levels of the configuration item attributes are achieved, or if certain predefined system changes occur.

Automated action

With the help of automated actions, Miradore can evaluate the events listed on the Events queue and react to the events automatically according to the settings of an automated action. The settings of an automated action item allow to define which type of events should be processed automatically and how Miradore responds to them. For example, Miradore can send an email or SMS notification automatically to a license administrator when license terms is about to expire in given amount of days. On the other hand, Miradore can be also configured to automatically create an incident or distribute a package when a problem is detected, thereby causing an event..
